The Melrose Hoffman Employee Critical Need Fund
Description

The Melrose Hoffman Critical Need Fund was created as a last resort to help employees, their spouses or eligible dependents who are facing financial hardship because of a qualified incident. An employee can only receive financial assistance once within a 12-month period. In the case of a denied application, the employee is eligible to submit a new application after six months, should a new incident occur.

Applications

Applications to the Fund are reviewed by the Minneapolis Foundation and will be treated in a confidential manner; however non-identifying statistical information will be reported to The Toro Company on a periodic basis. Fully complete applications will be reviewed within five business days. Submitting an incomplete application will delay review. Applicants are encouraged to keep a complete copy of the application for their personal records.

Employee Eligibility: A qualified employee of The Toro Company is an individual who is:

  • Current full-time employee under director level; or a
  • Temporary contract service employee with at least one year of service eligibility;
  • Actively employed or on approved leave of absence for no more than one year; and
  • Able to demonstrate a financial need that has not been met by their own or other pursued resources.

Qualified Incidents:

Qualified incidents are unexpected circumstances that arise outside of the employee’s control which causes an economic hardship for the employee’s family.  A qualified incident is typically a one-time event that occurs unexpectedly and causes unexpected bills. The reported incident must have occurred within one year of the application date.  Circumstances that may qualify for a grant fall into the following categories:

  • Serious illness or injury (incurred by the employee, employee’s spouse/domestic partner, or qualified dependent only).
    • Unplanned, unexpected expenses related to a medical/dental condition, serious injury or illness (e.g., medical bills, ambulance/airlift transportation, prescription medication, home modification or adaptive improvements, home/utility bills incurred while hospitalized, etc.) and that are not eligible for, or fully covered by, health insurance reimbursement.
  • Mental health or chemical dependency treatment
    • Expenses may be related to treatment for new diagnoses, but that are not eligible for health insurance reimbursement. Not intended for ongoing treatment.
  • Domestic abuse
    • Reasonable expenses for moving, or temporary housing, up to 30 days. Includes security deposit, legal costs, counseling, food, day care and reimbursement to a non-profit shelter.
  • Unsafe living situation
  • Loss of life  
    • Assistance to pay for funeral arrangements for an employee's spouse/domestic partner, qualified dependent, or parents of employee or employee’s spouse/domestic partner.
  • Vehicle damage resulting in loss of transportation
    • Damage to primary vehicle from an unforeseen/unexpected event, accident or act of vandalism not reimbursed by applicant’s insurance (e.g., repair damage to primary vehicle from an accident or act of vandalism not covered by insurance to enable the car to operate safely, cost of commercial/public transportation or reasonable car rental rates while car is being repaired up to 30 days, etc.).
  • Victim of a crime
    • Cover necessary costs of the subject to recover from the crime (e.g., medical and/or mental health treatment expenses, temporary housing, personal property repairs, etc.) not covered by insurance. *police report needed as documentation*
  • Military deployment
  • House repair/Damage to personal property/Unsafe living conditions
    • Repair damage to primary residence from fire, flood, storm, or unusual event outside of the applicant's control which is not covered by insurance. 
    • Provide reasonable expenses for moving, or temporary housing, up to 30 days, if needing to move due to unresponsive landlord or unsafe household conditions
    • This could include expenses related to damage to personal property, crisis housing or services, and unsafe living conditions. 
    • This does not include deferred maintenance.
  • Spouse/partner job loss
    • Financial hardship due to the job loss or furlough of a spouse/partner due to no fault of their own reducing household income.

Examples of incidents that DO NOT qualify include but are not limited to:

  • Being behind on bills or the existence of bills (such as credit card bills)
  • Lost wages (such as a reduction in hours, termination of employment, severance or unemployment)
  • Eviction or foreclosure notices, unless additional documentation is provided to link to a Qualified Incident 
  • Wage garnishments, unless due to a Qualified Incident
  • Elective cosmetic procedures or expenses related to a chronic condition (e.g., diabetic supplies)
  • Legal fees, bail, or legal fines
  • Divorce
  • Maintenance to house or vehicle that was not caused by an unexpected event or Qualified Incident
  • Federally declared natural disaster relief or pandemic expenses covered by other programs
